Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The St. Paul Park Refinery has a full-time, exempt opening for a Shift Supervisor. The Shift Supervisor’s main job duties are to provide support, leadership, and direction to his/her crew regarding daily operations activities. The work schedule is a 12-hr rotating shift, including some weekends and holidays. Occasional extra hours may be required.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Lead crew of 11-15 operators in support of day to day refinery and area goals.

  • Ensure crew follows all department and refinery policies and procedures

  • Conduct daily safety and start of shift meetings with crew

  • Set daily priorities for crew and follow up to ensure completion

  • Audit unit operations, procedures, permitting, LOTO, car seals, etc.; and follow up with operators on spot corrections

  • Provide on-shift training/coaching for operators

  • Maintain crew coverage following unscheduled vacancies

  • Conduct performance management of crew, including recognition and discipline if necessary

  • Drive environmental, health and safety excellence

  • Communicate production plan/supervision priorities to crew, and relay information on plant constraints and issues back up the chain of command

  • Initiate incident reports, notify the appropriate personnel, complete category 1 investigations, and drive the correct responses to resolve problems

  • Act as an Incident Commander during area emergencies until properly relieved

  • Support implementation of policies, practices and procedures; and ensure compliance to them

  • Implement changes to the production plan to manage plant constraints and maintain product quality

  • Aid in troubleshooting unit/product blending problems and coordinate outside resources as necessary

  • Document and report refinery activities

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong leadership and teamwork skills; able to train, set expectations, hold self and crew accountable and delegate authority/tasks

  • 3-5 years of relevant operating or supervisory experience in a refinery or petrochemical setting

  • High school level education or equivalent

  • Can work a rotating shift schedule

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; Effective interpersonal skills

  • Ability to utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, PI, Oracle, and Internet Explorer

  • Self-motivated individual who takes initiative to get results and is not afraid to hold people accountable

  • Capable to complete physical tasks such as working outdoors, climbing ladders, wearing respirators/SCBA equipment, working in confined spaces, lifting up to 50 pounds, etc.

  • Must be able to qualify for a TWIC Card, pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 10+ years’ operating knowledge of refinery process units up to control board operator proficiency

  • Formal post high school education/training in refinery operation and/or leadership

  • Supervisory experience with subordinates under a collective bargaining agreement

  • Experience with critical, fast-paced decision making
